Insuring a business. Where do you start?
Two of the most common questions I receive from business owners or managers about insurance for their business are
- what do I start with? and
- what are the main types of insurance cover I should consider?
What do I start with?
Always start by identifying the assets of the business that you or the business could not afford to replace should they be destroyed in a fire, storm etc such as buildings, plant & business equipment, stock and off course the income the business produces.
On far too many occasions I see business owners who are more concerned over whether they have a laptop computer worth $2,000 insured and they have not insured their business against loss of income following a fire, storm etc that could cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars or even their entire business if they are out of action for too long!
What are the main types of insurance cover I should consider?
Well, there are quite a few and the hard part for a business owner is that they are not all available from every insurance company.
This is why I recommend every business owner use the services of an insurance broker or insurance adviser.
Brokers or advisers have access to insurance products from various insurers so they can assist you to identify the risks your business faces and arrange insurance cover to protect the business from these risks.
